Garden Grove chemical incident | GKN Aerospace lawsuit | Orange County evacuation claim | methyl methacrylate exposure | chemical incident attorney Orange County

Were you impacted by the Garden Grove MMA chemical tank emergency? Learn what to document, what your rights are, and how HH Law Firm can help.
On May 21, 2026, a chemical tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove began overheating, prompting evacuation orders for an estimated 50,000 residents across Garden Grove, Stanton, Anaheim, Westminster, Cypress, and Buena Park. The evacuation orders have since been lifted, but for thousands of affected residents, the impact didn’t end when they got to go home.
What We Know So Far
A tank containing roughly 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA) began overheating after a refrigeration valve failed. Officials warned the tank could rupture, spill, or trigger a catastrophic explosion, prompting evacuation orders for an estimated 50,000 residents across Garden Grove, Stanton, Anaheim, Westminster, Cypress, and Buena Park. Firefighters spent days cooling the tank until a crack relieved the internal pressure, eliminating the explosion risk. Evacuation orders were fully lifted on May 26, and hazardous materials crews have since removed the remaining MMA from the two intact storage tanks on site.
The crisis was serious enough that California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County, and a federal emergency declaration was also signed, opening the door to federal disaster assistance for residents in addition to any civil claims.
The investigation isn’t over. The FBI and EPA served a search warrant at the facility in June, and the Orange County District Attorney has a parallel criminal investigation underway into how the tank was allowed to reach this point. Multiple lawsuits, including a class action, have already been filed against GKN Aerospace.
In plain terms: The explosion threat has passed, but the questions about why this happened, and who’s accountable for what residents lost, are still very much open.
Right Now, Prioritize Official Guidance
In the middle of an emergency like this, rumors spread fast. Stick to information from the Orange County Fire Authority, Orange County Health Care Agency, and your local city officials. They are the ones with real-time air quality data and evacuation status updates.
Document Everything, Even After the Evacuation Lifts
This is the part too many families skip, and it’s the part that matters most if you later decide to pursue a claim.
Evacuation costs. Hotel stays, gas, food, pet boarding, lost wages from missed work.
Health symptoms. Eye irritation, headaches, coughing, breathing issues. Write down dates, times, and severity, even if symptoms felt minor at the time.
Property impacts. Photos of any residue, odor, or damage. Save receipts for anything you had to replace.
Communications. Screenshots of evacuation alerts, school closure notices, and any correspondence from officials or your employer.
Good documentation today can make all the difference if you choose to pursue a claim later. Memories fade, but records don’t.
Don’t Wait on GKN to Make This Right
GKN Aerospace has publicly apologized and pledged several million dollars to community relief funds. City officials have called that response insufficient, and when directly asked at a packed City Council meeting whether the company would reimburse residents for hotel stays, lost wages, and other costs, GKN’s senior vice president would not commit to a timeline.
Deadlines depend on who you’re pursuing a claim against. Claims against GKN Aerospace directly generally fall under California’s standard statute of limitations, which gives most residents up to two years for injury-related claims. But if a government entity is later found to share responsibility, claims against that public entity must be filed within just six months of the incident, a far shorter window. Because it isn’t yet clear whether any government entity will be named, waiting to find out isn’t a safe strategy. The records you keep now are what will support your case later, regardless of which direction the investigation points.
You May Be Entitled to Compensation, and Most People Don’t Know That
Here’s what isn’t talked about enough: residents affected by an incident like this, whether through evacuation costs, lost income, medical symptoms, or property impacts, may have the right to file a claim. This isn’t just for people with visible injuries. If you paid for a hotel because you couldn’t go home, if you missed work, if your child’s school shut down and you had to scramble for childcare, those are real, documentable losses.
Other residents have already filed lawsuits, including a class action, against GKN Aerospace. You don’t have to navigate that process alone, and you don’t have to figure out on your own whether what happened to you qualifies.
